Mary Baker Eddy was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875.
Mary Baker Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
Raised in a Puritan home, Eddy loved and studied the Bible throughout her life. Often ill growing up, she experimented unsuccessfully with multiple healthcare systems. A turning point occurred in 1866 when she had a severe fall. After three days her health was not improving, so she asked for her Bible and became completely well after reading two of Jesus’ healings. Throughout her life she’d been able to heal others, but now she began to understand the science behind the activity. Often asked how she was able to heal, Eddy explained and documented it in her primary work, Science and Health, and named her discovery Christian Science.
It is of note that Mary Baker Eddy made her discovery of Christian Science mid-way through her long life, at a time when women could not vote and were generally barred from pulpits, seminaries, and the medical profession.
Mary Baker Eddy was a spiritual pioneer. Her work covered the disciplines of science, theology and medicine.
Mary Baker Eddy went on to establish the Church of Christ, Scientist. She published 16 more books and started several weekly and monthly magazines that feature articles on Christian Science practice and verified testimonies of healing. She founded The Christian Science Monitor, designed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.” It is a global newspaper which is alert to progress and promise as well as to humanity’s need to address suffering and conflict.
